Artificial intelligence is not new, but its various forms, capabilities, and impacts have accelerated rapidly in recent years. Powerful computational tools once limited to technical specialists are now widely accessible, creating new opportunities and challenges for the academic nursing community.
Dr. Regina Russell, the inaugural Executive Director for AI at Vanderbilt University, launched the 鈥淐ollaboratively Harnessing AI for Nursing鈥 initiative to promote education and the responsible use of AI among nursing students, faculty, and staff. She will share her experiences researching the AI competencies essential for clinicians, examining how nursing school faculty and staff are using generative AI, and evaluating the quality of AI outputs for administrative tasks.
Dr. Russell will highlight landmarks, potholes, and pointers from her journey to help illuminate the path ahead. Participants will be encouraged to begin developing their own professional strategy and organizational maps for navigating AI in academic nursing.

Dr. Regina G. Russell is the director for assessment and evaluation at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and associate professor in the Health Promotion, Populations, and Health Systems faculty community. As a social scientist, she works at the intersection of organizing and learning in health sciences education, with a focus on measuring individual and organizational performance to help drive learning and educational quality improvement. Dr. Russell brings three decades of experience in higher and professional education. She holds graduate degrees in higher education, sociology, and public administration, and is part of the VUSN Center for Research Development and Scholarship and the Vanderbilt University Data Science Institute.
