CDC & ODPHP鈥檚 Response to U.S. Opioid Overdose Epidemic
Webinar Description
This webinar on pain management and opioid maintenance will review the current state of the opioid overdose epidemic; discuss the role of nurses in pain management; and present federal resources available for health providers, including nurses. Dr. Christina Mikosz from the CDC will provide a brief overview of the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain and review CDC's efforts to educate providers. Dr. Clydette Powell from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) will describe an online training resource for various members of the healthcare team, including nurses, called Pathways to Safer Opioid Use. The OASH training is an interactive online course that promotes the appropriate and effective use of opioids to manage chronic pain.
The course allows users to participate as one of 4 members of the health care team. During the presentation, Dr. Powell will review the skills and scenarios covered in the nursing portion of the Pathways training. By the end of the webinar, participants will have a better understanding of the current opioid epidemic and will be able to identify federal resources to support their practice.
Objectives:
- Describe the epidemiology of the current opioid overdose burden.
- Recognize the CDC Guidelines and a description of CDC’s efforts around provider education.
- Describe the National Action Plan for Adverse Drug Event Prevention.
- Discuss the online resource for health providers including nurses on improving pain management and controlled substances to prevent adverse drug events from opioids.

Christina A. Mikosz, MDMedical Officer

Christina A. Mikosz, MD, MPH is a Medical Officer on the Prescription Drug Overdose Health Systems team in the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In her current role, Dr. Mikosz leads efforts related to the implementation of the 2016 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain particularly around clinician training and education around safer opioid prescribing practices. She also provides technical expertise to states on Guideline-concordant care to support ongoing overdose prevention work and engages in research on non-opioid methods of treating pain. She completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California – San Francisco, later joining the hospital medicine faculty there, and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. She received her BA at Northwestern University, her MPH from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and also previously served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer with the CDC.

Clydette Powell, MD, MPH, FAAP serves as the Director of the Division of Health Care Quality, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Rockville, MD. Her responsibilities include oversight of the federal efforts to advance two National Action Plans: one for the prevention of Health Care Associated Infections and the other for prevention of Adverse Drug Events. Her medical degree was awarded by The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and her MPH is from UCLA School of Public Health. She is triple board certified in pediatrics, child neurology, and preventive medicine/public health. She continues to practice clinical medicine at a federally qualified health center in Virginia.
